Domain Names & Political Risk

Domain names and political risk has always been something I’ve thought about. After all I studied finance and a heavy portion of my studies were based on calculating risk. Further I’m a part time domainer and when it came to building my domain portfolio I used many of the diversification and risk aversion theories I learned in school. Political risk is a topic covered in International Biz 101, otherwise it’s very basic. Domain name extension such as .ly, .at, .co, and such have gained some popularity recently and today TechCrunch report that if you are .ly registrant you are at risk of loosing your domain name to the Lybian Government. Ouch, all that time and money you spent building your brand, links, and such are apparently all at risk. Don’t be fooled though, it’s not only the 2nd & 3rd world countries that take up the practice of de-registering domain names.
Does the Libyan Nic have domain parking partnership ? That’s a joke of course.
