Many small business have struggled with Social Media and although this eMarketer article does not say this, some have completely failed at it, believe us that they have. Understanding a small business’s expectations and using social media as ones primary marketing channel would have been a bad strategy.
Read the article, it’s a good one and let us know what you think and if you have any questions. All this said we do believe that Social Media and Facebook in general are necessary for many business including some small business. This post is not intended on bashing Social Media in anyway and as Search Engine Marketers we do believe that there are synergies between SM and Search. We also believe that SM can have tremendous benefits for some small businesses while relatively limited to others. The bottom line is do your homework and set some expectations so that you can determine how much time to allocate toward SM vs. other channels otherwise the opportunity cost of your time can bankrupt you.
